How to cut your Stainless Steel Woven Mesh?

We are often asked how to cut stainless steel woven mesh and the answer very much depends on the wire diameter.

The smallest wire gauge that we stock is 0.025mm diameter which is thinner than the finest human hair and obviously doesn't need to be cut with an angle grinder. In fact, the finest meshes are easily cut using a pair of household scissors.

When using an angle grinder, the cutting disc should be 0.9mm thick and of a type suitable for cutting stainless steel. Remember that an angle grinder typically operates at a speed of 10,000 RPM so take appropriate safety precautions. Wear gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection, and keep other people out of the vicinity when you are cutting.

Stainless steel woven mesh is a durable and versatile material used in a variety of applications, including filtration, screening, and architectural design. Cutting stainless steel woven mesh to size may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be done efficiently and accurately. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to cut stainless steel woven mesh effectively.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools

Before you begin, ensure you have the following tools on hand:

Heavy-duty scissors or tin snips

Wire cutters or bolt cutters

Safety gloves and goggles

Step 2: Measure and Mark

Using a ruler or measuring tape, determine the dimensions for the cut you need. Mark the cutting line on the stainless steel woven mesh using a permanent marker or scribe. Ensure your measurements are precise to avoid any inaccuracies in the final cut.

Step 3: Choose the Cutting Method

Depending on the size and thickness of the mesh, choose the appropriate cutting method:

Heavy-duty scissors or tin snips: Ideal for small cuts or intricate shapes.

Wire cutters or bolt cutters: Suitable for larger cuts or thicker mesh.

Step 4: Cutting with Heavy-Duty Scissors or Tin Snips

Place the stainless steel woven mesh on a flat and stable surface.

Hold the mesh firmly with one hand while using the scissors or tin snips to cut along the marked line.

Apply steady pressure and make gradual cuts to prevent bending or distorting the mesh.

Step 5: Cutting with Wire Cutters or Bolt Cutters

Position the mesh on a sturdy workbench or cutting surface.

Use wire cutters or bolt cutters to snip through the wires along the marked line.

Apply firm pressure and use the leverage of the cutters to make clean and precise cuts.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

After cutting, inspect the edges of the stainless steel woven mesh for any sharp or jagged edges.

Use a metal file or sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges and ensure a clean finish.

Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges during this process.

Step 7: Safety Precautions

Always wear safety gloves and goggles when handling stainless steel woven mesh and cutting tools to prevent injury.

Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling metal dust or particles generated during cutting.

By following these steps and safety precautions, you can confidently cut stainless steel woven mesh to the desired size and shape for your project. Whether you're working on a DIY project at home or a professional application in an industrial setting, mastering the art of cutting stainless steel woven mesh will enable you to achieve precise and accurate results.
